FOUNDRY THE OLD WEATHER STATION

Self-catering group accommodation in the
heart of Mid-Wales

The centre provides comfortable accommodation for groups in the Cambrian Mountains between Llanidloes and Machynlleth.

We are situated on the edge of the Hafren Forest, on the slopes of Plumlumon, near the head of Llyn Clywedog.

The Old Weather Station accommodates groups of 24 with 6 bedrooms, a large lounge, catering kitchen & dining area.

The centre provides and ideal base for walking, running, mountain biking, kayaking, wildlife watching, family groups and parties.

The Hafren Forest, Plumlumon and Clywedog are all excellent walking & running country, with numerous marked trails. There is open access within the Hafren Forest and much of the surrounding area is designated access land under the CRoW act. The Severn Way and Wye Valley walk both start close to the centre and the Sarn Sabrina passes close by. We are also on the Lon Las Cymru and Glyndwr's Way. Cadair Idris and the Aran Mountains in Southern Snowdonia are within 30 minutes drive, as are the beaches of Cardigan Bay.

The Hafren Forest and surrounding hills provide almost endless possibilities for mountain bikers . The marked routes at Nant yr Arian and Machynlleth are within easy reach, and the cross country riding around Rhayader & Radnor, and the world renowned trails at Coed y Brenin, are a short drive away.

Mid Wales is blessed with a wealth of quality kayaking rivers with few access issues. The Upper Severn, Upper Wye, Clywedog, Dulas, Tywmyn, Marteg, Claerwen, Banwy, Rheidol, Ystwyth and Dyfi are all within easy reach of the centre [river details at www.canoewales.com]. We also have access to sailing and canoeing on Llyn Clywedog.

The surrounding area abounds with wildlife . Buzzards, Red Kites and Ravens are common. Peregrine, Goshawk, Hen Harrier and Merlin can also be spotted close to the centre. The Hafren Forest is home to Tawny, Long Eared and Barn Owls whilst Short Eared Owls can be seen on the surrounding hills. Osprey are spring and autumn visitors to Clywedog, and have nested at one site in Mid Wales. Other birdlife includes Dippers, Woodcock, Snipe, Curlew and Crossbill. The rivers support Otters and Badgers are common on local farmland. Add to this deer in the forest and regular sightings of Polecat, Stoat, Weasel and Hare.

The market towns of Llanidloes and Machynlleth are within 15 minutes of the centre. Both have a range of shops, banks, pubs, restaurants and sports centres with swimming pools. Quality on-site catering for events and parties can be arranged. Transport to and from Llanidloes can also be arranged.

We are able to offer a range of adventurous activities for groups staying at the Old Weather Station. Activities available include abseiling, canoeing, gorge scrambling, high ropes, kayaking, mountain biking, mountain walking, orienteering, sailing and a range of team building activities. We can also arrange off-road motorcycling, quad biking and rally experience locally.
