Thank god for cheap airlines. £70 on a budget airline ticket
and I am climbing in weather better than a sunny summers day in
the UK and it is the end of November. There are loads of crags
& bouldering areas dotted around the beautiful island of Sardinia
(see attached map). However, with only eight days of climbing
we decided to base our trip around Cala Gonone.
Cala
Gonone is a small village/port on the East Coast of Sardinia approx
2-3hrs from Alghero airport.
There
is one road in and out. It's about as big as a small town in the
Peak District with three small supermarkets, a number of bars/restaurants
and a limited amount of accommodation. None of which is a problem
over the winter months, as there is no one else about.
One
thing worth mentioning is that the hospitality was excellent,
this is not the Costa del Rip Off! So, please be on your best
behaviour.
Getting
There.
We flew with Ryan Air to Alghero, where we hired a car from Autos
Abroad. Its 2/3 hours from the airport on the west coast to Cala
Gonone on the east coast, most of which is via a motorway (well
it's a dual carriage way really).
When
leaving the airport head north towards Sassari then head south
on the motorway heading for Nuro then onto to Dorgali and finally
through the tunnel to Cala Gonone which is 7km further on. Dorgali
is a slightly larger town than Cala and has accommodation and
larger supamarkets.
Generally
speaking once you leave the motorways you are on quite small and
very windy country roads, so getting around takes time and can
make even the most steady of stomach somewhat quesy.
