How to get there:
Click here to view large plan. Most of the package holiday companies fly to Kos from which it is easy to get over to Kalymnos via a bus service from the airport to Mastichari (the port of Kos) every half hour and thence by the large ferry service operating three times per day or a smaller express boat operating more regularly. So, a flight only deal with Airtours, Air 2000,JMC etc; will get you to Kos the rest is easy-bus, ferry to Porthia (the capital of Kalymnos) where if you arrive late there are plenty of rooms, apartments and hotels available to use as a base or to tide you over till the next day when you get your bearings and decide at which resort/village you want to stay-Massouri and Myrties are the most central to the cragging and have the greatest selection of cheap accommodation, bars and eating houses. Please visit Glaros snack bar in Massouri for up to date general information on climbing from Steve McDonell ex. Liverpool.
Several travel companies run all-in packages to the Island and can often prove cheaper than the hassle of a do-it-yourself job. We travelled with the prize winning 'Direct Greece' who could not be faulted in any way and reduced their price for a late booking. We met other tourists on the island who travelled with Olympic out of East Midlands for half our price (£159 each for two weeks all in on Kalymnos) so it pays to shop around.
The most pleasant place to stay however if you wish a quieter place in idyllic surroundings with a truly Greek flavour is the small hamlet of Emporios on the north end of the island. Mega friendly and great food at both Irene and George's Artistico Taverna or Harry's restaurant (free guidebooks given ) and everything is close to the beach making it ideal for families.

Best time to go:
Generally you can climb in Kalymnos at any time of year but one must not forget that the summers are very hot indeed and the winter, whilst it can be very pleasant in the sun can also be a bit chilly and windy but rarely wet like the UK. However, the very best periods to visit this delightful place are either the spring -April through May or the autumn September through to November. But having said this one must bear in mind that most places close down at the end of October and, therefore, it would be a sound idea to arrange accommodation by phone outside of the holiday periods:

How to get around.
The normal and cheapest way to travel the very short distances to the crags is by motor scooter-cool and great fun but do, in spite of it being uncool, wear the helmet they offer you (like here it is compulsory but practically nobody bothers!!!) If you're taking the family then an open cabriolet car is the biz and these and the bikes are available in Massouri and Myrties at approx. £20 per day for car and £5 for the scooter. If you're skint then the local bus is a great laugh and unbelievably cheap-find the times and gear your cragging to them.
