Take
twenty-two teams consisting of four men and two women add twenty
boulder problems ranging from technical slab problems to horrifically
powerful roof problems and finally mix with the Bendcrete dyno contest
and you have the perfect ingredients for a very entertaining competition.
As
usual with these events, roomers of foreign supper star entries
had circulating for weeks before the event but alas it was not to
be. However, the field contained the usual homegrown talent all
drafted in by their sponsors and climbing walls for the status of
becoming the 'Team Bouldering Masters'.
Scarpa
looked odds on favourites to take home the title but the unusual
nature of the problems proved a great leveller. Despite both Malcolm
Smith and Andrew Earl out performing everybody by a clear ten points
coming second and first respectively it was only sufficient for
third place. The Prana team came a close second thanks to an awesome
effort by Gemma Powell who won the individual women's
competition and Ben Bransby, Adam Dewhurst and Miles Gibson scoring
over 140 points each. Team consistency was the name of this game
and The Foundry proved to be the measure of all the other teams
thanks to an impressive 161 points from Steve McClure and high scores
from all the other team members. Credit must go to the Edge Climbing
Centre for hosting the event and especially Percy Bishton and his
team for setting some very challenging problems, nice one.
