When to climb
The
Australian summer reaches it’s peak in January / February which
Stapylton way means a whopping 40oC. However temperatures of 30
or so are reached from mid-November onwards. For this reason the
best season is pre-November. But fortunately for us many of these
boulders are caves or sheltered from the sun all day. So if you
get up early you can get really good conditions even if it’s 35
or so out of the shade. Places like HMC and BTS are great in the
full on heat. Areas such as Loopeys, Campground, Trackside and Citadel
are better as early venues.
One of the
great things about the area is that the rock is excellent and has
amazing frictional properties. Combined with the nature of most
holds being relatively big (pulling between them presents the main
difficulty) conditions aren’t the be all and end all. Rumor has
it that if conditions are perfect you simply can’t fall off!
