Climate.
The
best time to visit is during the autumn (Fall) and also the spring.
I was there at the start of October and the weather was perfect,
varying between a very warm 25 degrees centigrade and a crisp 5
degrees centigrade, sometimes dipping to below freezing at night.
It is still possible to climb when the weather is cold as the sun
generally shines and some of the crags are south facing. The summer
is guaranteed to be too hot and humid and the winters can be cold
and wet.
Why not try the www.bbc.co.uk
World Weather report for a five day forecast.
Supplies.
If
you have a car the nearby town of Stanton has a Krogers, the American
equivalent of Tescos in addition to all the fast food restaurants
and ice cream outlets you would expect. Stanton is only ten miles
from Miguels. It is possible to just survive on pizza, sandwiches
and ice cream from Miguels with trips to the service
stations only two miles away, to supplement your diet, but there
will always be someone going past a food store. Miguels is located
in a dry county meaning there is no alcohol available. Many of the
crags are located in neighbouring counties and there are beer stores
situated on route. The closest is only a five minute drive from
Miguels, just past Torrent Falls crag. Simply buy your beer and
smuggle it back into Miguels.
Rest
days.
Kentucky is
renowned for its forests and horses. The whole state is covered
in trees. Therefore one day can easily be spent walking on one of
the well maintained trails. There are many marked hikes around the
forest near to Miguels. Simply pick the distance you require and
follow the signs. A short hike will take you up to the Natural Span
Bridge which is worth a few photos. The nearby town of Lexington
has a massive horse racing track and you may be able to find a day
with a few races. There
are also a number of cinemas and malls near the airport. There is
a huge bookshop where you can hunt for guide books to other areas.
Cincinatti is only 2 1/2 hours drive from the gorge and is a large
town if you like doing the tourist bit. There are regular American
football and baseball matches that provide a touch of American culture.
Every American library has free access to the Internet, so if you
need to check your messages or keep in touch just turn and ask to
use one of the PCs.
