There’s plenty of
other things going on during the Festival, so much in fact that you’ll
be pushed to get round everything that’s on offer. But one of
the first points of call for many will be the Retail Village.
Shopping, Shopping, Shopping!
The country's leading outdoor shops - Snow + Rock, Outside, and
Mountain Shack have all set up a home away from home on the arena
floor. And their temporary shops will be piled high with the best
gear at the cheapest prices. If you're planning any outdoor purchase
in the near future, make sure you do it here - most visitors will
recoup the cost of their admission with just one bargain purchase.
And these prices are available only for this weekend, and will not
be repeated elsewhere - so just make sure you take full advantage.
Entre-Prises, Greenshires and the BMC will also have lots of goodies
for sale, if you've got the space in those bulging carrier bags!
But if whipping out the credit card isn't exercise enough, there
are some great climbing competitions for the general public to enter
- with, of course, great prizes.
International
Dyno Open
The Outdoor Designs International Dyno Open takes place on the Sunday
on the Entre-Prises boulders used for the World Cup. Come and have
a go if you think you’re up to it - dyno upward, sideways
and outward. The unofficial world record is an incredible 2.6m,
which doesn’t sound much until you remember that the board
overhangs by 20 degrees and the finishing jugs are also offset from
the start holds by 45 degrees! Qualifying is all day on the Sunday
with the ‘bar’ being raised periodically. The final
will take place just before the finale of the Snow + Rock International
Masters.
Cotswold Bouldering Challenge
Also on the Sunday is the Cotswold Outdoor Bouldering Challenge.
Reckon that you’re better than the world’s best? Well
come and prove it. We’ll be leaving up some of the problems
from the UIAA-ICC Bouldering World Cup as well as setting loads
more. This event will be fairly relaxed with a number of time slots
for you to have a play. There will also be a Junior Bouldering Challenge
on the Sunday morning with specially set problems. So don’t
forget your boots, chalk bag, and plenty of energy.
Information
To find out more about a whole range of outdoor organisations, take
a walk around the concourse level. A whole range of display booths
will fill you in about just about every aspect of the great outdoors.
Have a Go Walls
Four walls, one boulder and
a whole lot of fun!
If you, or your children have ever fancied having a go at climbing
- then this is an ideal oppourtunity. Experience climbing on one
of the five public access walls, under the expert guidance of highly
qualified instructors. And for those with some climbing experience,
we're also running a series of workshops to improve your skills,
from belaying to self-rescue.
To book a taster session, or a skills workshop, just head over to
the BMC Information stand. No equipment is required for the taster
sessions - we'll provide boots, harness, chalkbag, and helmet. And,
of course, it's all free.
The main organised events on the ‘come and try it’ walls
are outlined below. These indicate the busy times where patience
may be needed, but on Sunday, the walls will be open to the public
for most of the day.
FRI: Local
schools and youth groups all day.
SAT AM: Scout Regional Youth Competition Series
SUN AM EU Rock Katz & EU Up and Up
